Brenda Hudlow
Board of Directors - President & Founder
Executive Director


Brenda Hudlow works for a commercial real estate investment and development firm in Atlanta, Georgia as Office Manager and is a licensed real estate agent.  She attends the University of West Georgia where she is pursuing a B.A. degree in Marketing and Real Estate.  She has over 15 years of office management and human resources experience as President/CEO of HEI Staffing Services which specialized in placement of Executive Assistants and Administrative Assistants for the telecommunications industry.  Her wildlife background includes the care and public education of exotic wildlife (mammals, reptiles, and birds) for over 10 years as the owner of Pet-A-Fair, Inc.    She served as President and Founder of The American Miniature Pig Association, a national registry and information source for Vietnamese Potbellied Pigs.  She has served on several nonprofit organization committees for fundraising including events for The United Way, The Georgia Council on Child Abuse, The Holyfield Foundation, The Michael Bolton Foundation, and The Tom Glavine Field of Dreams Golf and Tennis Tournament.  She also served on the Board of Directors of Executive Women International.  She has worked with Zoo Atlanta as a volunteer docent.  She is a certified wildlife rehabilitator and member of the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (N.W.R.A.) and the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (I.W.R.C.).     

Larry Hudlow
Board of Directors – Vice President

Larry Hudlow retired from Delta Airlines as Senior Customer Service Agent with 28 years of service.  He co-owned Pet-A-Fair, Inc. managing the care of exotic wildlife (mammals, reptiles, and birds) for over 10 years.  He has been involved with nonprofit fundraising events for The Georgia Council on Child Abuse, The United Way, The Michael Bolton Foundation, and The Tom Glavine Field of Dreams Golf and Tennis Tournament.  He is a member of the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (N.W.R.A.) and the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (I.W.R.C.)  He is currently employed with Superior Water Service as Field Technician and chemically treats water for cooling towers and boiler systems. 

Linda Brooks

Linda Brooks has been an Executive Assistant for over 14 years with HEI Staffing Services working for executives of the BellSouth companies and Cingular Wireless.  She is currently working with WellStar Health Systems.
 

Dr. Stephen J. Hernandez-Divers

Stephen Hernandez-Divers graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in London with a distinction in Exotic Animal Medicine in 1994.  He is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Diplomate of Zoological Medicine, and an RCVS recognized Specialist in Zoo & Wildlife Medicine.  He is a consultant to the Spanish Government on the Gallotia lizard project in the Canary Islands and the Veterinary Information Network, and Past-President of the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians.  Dr. Hernandez-Divers has lectured across the United States and Europe, and has published numerous book chapters and journal manuscripts.  He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Herpetological Medicine and Surgery.  Steve emigrated to the United States to marry Sonia Hernandez-Divers, and he became the Assistant Professor of Exotic Animal, Wildlife and Zoological Medicine at the University of Georgia in August 2001.  His current exotic animal research projects include evaluation of renal and hepatic function, meloxicam pharmacokinetics, chelonian reproductive evaluation, and minimally-invasive endosurgery. 

Craig A. Flugel
Director

Craig A. Flugel works for American Software in Atlanta as Sr. Systems Analyst/ Helpdesk Supervisor.  He worked as a volunteer E.M.T. member of several ambulance/ rescue squads for over 10 years, holding many leadership positions.  He served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Monroe Y.M.C.A. and the Monroe United Methodist Church preschool.  He holds an R.V.E.S.R.A.  (Recognized Volunteer Employee Services and Recreation Associate) title with the National Employee Services Association.  Currently, he serves as Secretary of the Nottingham Gate Homeowners’ Association.  He has participated in the Michael Bolton Charities Activities Committee for 15 years.  He grew up with a variety of animals and has a great love for them.
 

Linda S. Flugel
Director 


Linda S. Flugel has worked as a Legal Assistant for over 30 years in New Jersey, Connecticut, and Georgia and is currently employed as a Legal Assistant in the Legal Department at Cingular Wireless – The New AT&T in Atlanta, Georgia.  She has volunteered with the Michael Bolton Charities for 15 years. She participated in the P.T.A. at her son’s school and is actively involved with the Homeowners’ Association in her community.  She has a deep love for animals. 
   

Carl Hodges
Board of Directors – General Counsel
 

Carl Hodges is CEO of the law firm Hodges, McEachern & King, a firm with concentration in civil trial practice, closely held corporations, trust and estates, real estate, and elder care law and has been in practice for twenty-nine years.  He graduated from Georgia Tech with honor in 1973 and from University of Georgia School of Law in 1975.  His hobbies include nature, travel, photography, and painting. 

Rob Stadler
Director – Media and Public Relations 

When Atlanta listeners need the very latest information, they turn to veteran Star 94 News Director Rob Stadler on the Steve & Vikki Morning Show. Born in Shelby, OH, Rob began as a sportswriter for the town paper and made the switch to radio upon graduating from high school. After stops at stations in Columbus, OH and Miami, FL, Rob came to Atlanta in 1987. He's been named Atlanta's Best Newscaster by the Achievement in Radio Awards nine times. He has also won numerous Associated Press honors and two prestigious Edward R. Murrow Awards, including one for his on-the-scene coverage of Eric Rudolph’s 1997 bombings in Sandy Springs. 

WILDLIFE HOSPITAL STEERING COMMITTEE 

Lorrie Hale-Mitchell, DVM  

Dr. Lorrie Hale-Mitchell graduated from University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995.  She practiced at Denham Springs Animal Hospital, in Louisiana, from February 1997 to December 2006.  Since 1997, she has been involved with the veterinary aspect of wildlife rehabilitation.  Dr Hale lectured at the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (NWRA) Symposium in 2002 and 2004 assisting with several wet labs at the conference every year.  She has lectured throughout the state of Louisiana on the medical aspects of rehabilitation. She was President of Louisiana Wildlife Rehabilitation Association (LAWRA) from 2004-2006 and has served as Consulting Veterinarian for seven years. Through LAWRA, she and the other board members held seminars every year on wildlife rehabilitation, including lectures and hands-on labs.  She is married to Dr. Mark Mitchell, the former Director of The Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana (WHL), and Associate Professor of Zoological, Exotic, Wildlife Medicine at the University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine.  Dr. Hale and family, moved back to Illinois where she is a relief veterinarian and stay-at-home mother to their new daughter. 

 Maggie Mercer, DVM  

Dr. Maggie Mercer is owner and Veterinarian at Douglas County Animal Hospital in Douglasville, GA.  Previously, she practiced at Gwinnett-Suwannee emergency clinic and was Associate DVM at Centerville Hospital in Snellville, GA.  She also has wildlife experience as a Veterinary Technician for a Wildlife Veterinarian working with deer and raptors.  She graduated from The University of Georgia in 1999.  She is a member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Georgia Veterinary Medical Association (GVMA), American Business Women’s Association (ABWA), and Douglas County Chamber of Commerce.

Elizabeth Mackey, DVM  

Elizabeth Mackey is a 1986 graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she received a BS in Biology. She taught secondary sciences for 7 years. In 1993 she became permitted for the rehabilitation of native wildlife and licensed for using non-releasable raptors in educational programs. She has traveled throughout SC and GA speaking to schools and organizations about wildlife and conservation. She is a former Executive Director of the Wildlife Coalition of the Midlands, and an active member of NWRA and IWRC. In 2006 she received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia. She is currently doing an internship at UGA in exotic, wildlife and zoological medicine. She is married to Kelly, a physician with Regional FirstCare, and they have a farm in Watkinsville.


Diane Owen
Fundraising - Grants
 

Diane Owen is the Accounting Manager for Board of Regents Sponsored Operations, Georgia Institute of Technology, and was previously the grant writer and post award administrator for the Chattahoochee Hill Country Conservancy.  Prior to that, she spent nearly a decade as a Financial Analyst in federal grants management at Emory University. In bringing her grant writing and grants management experience to GROW, she feels she has come full circle to her environmental training in archeological survey and fieldwork. She attended the University of South Florida and Florida Atlanta University for a Bachelors in Science in Anthropology. She later pursued anthropology research at  F.A.U. with an emphasis on Archeology.  During this time, she accepted a job with Merrill Lynch as a management assistant, eventually transferring to the Merrill Lynch Atlanta Regional Center as a personnel specialist, and was later promoted to Branch Office Operations Supervisor. After working in the financial services and financial planning industries for several years, she took a position at Emory University in a medical research division, eventually achieving the position of Financial Analyst. Her Georgia Tech responsibilities include oversight of a $35 million NSF award; her Emory responsibilities included management of $20 million in grant funds annually, much of it Federal NIH funds, for a period of nearly 10 years.  She is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Professional Accounting at the University of West Georgia.  She will assist GROW with grant writing and advise our Accountant on grants management issues. 

J. C. Elder, III
Architectural Design
 

J. C. is a Graduate student at the Georgia Institute of Technology.  After having received his B. S. in Architecture from Georgia Tech in 2004, he worked for Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback and Associates before returning to school to pursue his M. Arch I  in the Fall of 2005. 

Sally Joosten   

Sally Joosten has been a professional wildlife rehabilitator and educator, specializing in teaching others who are getting started in the field of wildlife rehabilitation since 1963.  She is Founder & Former Director of McHenry County Conservation District Wildlife Center located in Illinois for twenty years beginning in 1975.  She is a founding Board member of the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (NWRA) and Co-author of “NWRA Principles of Wildlife Rehabilitation, The Essential Guide for Novice and Experienced Rehabilitators” (1st and 2nd Editions). She is founding Board member and current Vice President of the Illinois Wildlife Rehabilitators Association.  She has wrote numerous published papers.  She was the recipient of the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998 and the National Registry of Who’s Who in 1999. 

Bea Orendorff  

Bea Orendorff has been a licensed wild bird rehabilitator since 1981 and is the Founder of Wild Bird Rescue, Inc. a home-based nonprofit organization that cares for all species of wild birds.  She is also Co-Founder and past President of the Kentucky Wildlife Rehabilitators Association, and Co-Founder and Vice-President of the Ohio Wildlife Rehabilitators Association.  During the 1980’s she was Director of the Cincinnati Zoo’s wildlife rehabilitation program (4,000-5,000 animals admitted per year).  She served on the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (NWRA) Board of Directors for the past 13 years. She is also active on several NWRA committees. She was the recipient of the 1997 NWRA Significant Achievement Award and the 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award.  She was the editor of the NWRA newsletter for 13 years and was instrumental in the creation of its peer-reviewed journal.  She was also the editor of NWRA’s 2003 symposium proceedings.  She lectures at state and national conferences, has published several papers and consults with other rehabilitators from around the country.

ADVISORY BOARD 

I. Lehr Brisbin, Ph.D. (Term March 2006 to Present) 

Dr. I. Lehr Brisbin retired from the University of Georgia (UGA) in October 2005 as Senior Research Ecologist at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory and Professor in both the College of Ecology and in the Dept of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences.  He currently holds the title of Senior Scientist Emeritus with UGA.  As a graduate school faculty member, he has served as the major professor for 9 Ph.D. and 15 Masters students at UGA, and has authored more 259 articles.  Dr. Brisbin obtained his undergraduate degree in biology from Wesleyan University in Connecticut in 1962, immediately followed with his M.S.(1965) and Ph.D (1967) degrees from the University of Georgia.  Dr. Brisbin’s area of expertise is in the assessment of contamination on natural systems and associated wildlife habitat.  He brings extensive experience in habitat assessment to GROW, and will advise on habitat selection for wildlife returned to the wild. Dr. Brisbin is also a Certified Wildlife Biologist (since 1979, Wildlife Society) and a Certified Senior Ecologist (since 1984, Ecological Society of America).

Tracey Kelly

Tracey Kelly worked with Federal Express for 17 years as a Dangerous Goods Specialist, International Shipment Audit Specialist, and Swing Driver/ Courier.  She is co-owner of Kelly & Hardin, Inc., a marketing, printing, and graphic design company.  She also has a Realtors License.  When she has an opportunity, she is a substitute teacher at Hayes Elementary School.  She works with the Air Force Auxiliary, a nonprofit organization, in the Civil Air Patrol as a 2nd Lieutenant.  Their missions include Cadet Programs, Emergency Services, and Aerospace Education.  Her activities include working with the cadets and training on an air search and rescue team as a mission scanner/observer.  She loves animals and enjoys working with them as well as learning about them.

Jackie Smaga
Grants

Jackie Smaga has over 10 years of foundation management experience including foundation establishment and annual event coordination that ranges from the initial concept to the post-event follow up.  She has over 17 years of fundraising experience securing donations and grants from individuals, corporations, and foundations.  Since 1993, she has served as executive director of The Michael Bolton Charities, Inc. which she and Mr. Bolton started to benefit children and women at risk. 

Joyce E. Logan
Public Relations 

Joyce E. Logan worked as the C.E.O. and owner of Fan Emporium--a public relations, marketing firm developed in the 80’s with celebrity clients such as Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey, Kenny Loggins, Carly Simon, and many others--until 2000, when she sold her business.  She created newsletters, backstage “meet & greets,” and various contests, and unique merchandise offers for Fan Emporium.  The New York Times has published three articles about her work.  Her awards and accomplishments include the Who’s Who for “Executives and Professionals Edition” in 1996 and 1997, the Golden Phone Award for “Excellence in Fundraising” in 1994 and 1995, and the Better Business Bureau for “Excellence in Business” in 1996.  She also coauthored three books in 1997, 1999, and 2000—self-publishing two and LifeTime Books publishing the other. She currently works as a consultant for various companies.
